5:57 PM | The National Weather Service issues a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for all of Central Indiana. |
6:00 PM | The National Weather Service is contacted a second time by Indiana State Fair Staff for a weather update. |
7:00 PM | The National Weather Service (NWS) is contacted a third time by Indiana State Fair Staff for a weather update. NWS advises a Thunderstorm would be at the fairgrounds between 9:00 PM and 9:30 PM EST. NWS advised the storm would contain heavy rain, lightning, strong winds and 1 to 2 inch hail. |
7:04 PM | First auto-dialer message sent out to State Fair staff regarding Severe Thunderstorm Watch. |
8:00 PM | The National Weather Service is contacted a fourth time by Indiana State Fair Staff for a weather update. NWS advised the storm would arrive at the fairgrounds at approximately 9:15 PM EST. The storm would contain small hail and 40 mph winds. |
8:09 PM | Second auto-dialer weather alert sent to State Fair Staff regarding Severe Thunderstorm Watch. |
8:30 PM | Additional Indiana State Police moved to the grandstand to assist onsite Indiana State Police personnel and ESG Security in the evacuation of the concert attendees. |
8:39 PM | The National Weather Service issues a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Marion County. |
8:45 PM | A preliminary announcement is made by the concert MC advising the concert attendees that severe weather is moving into the area. The announcement includes instructions on how and where to seek shelter. |
8:49 PM | Stage Collapses |
8:50 PM | The Indianapolis Fire Department receives call advising them of a collapse with injuries at the Fair Grounds. |
8:51 PM | Onsite Indianapolis Fire Department personnel respond to the scene with additional Indianapolis Fire Department and Indianapolis EMS units being dispatched to the scene. State police officers arrive at the scene of the collapse and assist rescue operations. |
8:54 PM | Confirmed collapse with multiple injuries. |
8:54 PM | Mass Casualty Incident Level 1 declared. |
8:55 PM | Indianapolis Metro Police Emergency Response Group responds to the collapse scene. |
9:06 PM | Marion County Coroner requested to respond to the scene. |
9:13 PM | Power cut to the stage |
9:15 PM | Coroner’s office arrives at the scene. |
10:03 PM | Command upgraded to a Mass Casualty Incident Level 3. |
10:05 PM | All patients transported. 45 patients transported to local hospitals 5 fatalities, 4 confirmed dead at the scene, 1 dead at a local hospital. |
10:26 PM | K9 Search requested from Indiana Task Force One (FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Team). |
10:56 PM | K9 Search begins with three dogs from Task Force, this augmented searches all ready completed by rescue personnel. |
11:27 PM | K9 Primary and Secondary search is all clear. |
11:46 PM | Rescue operations concluded. |
(8:14) 1:53 AM | Indianapolis Fire Department completes secondary search of the entire Fairgrounds to ensure on persons injured or otherwise are still in the area is completed. Search is all clear. |
