A semi truck collided with an SUV Tuesday afternoon, killing one and injuring two more. The fatal truck accident occurred at 3:30 p.m. on Route 6 in Channahon. The driver of the truck sustained no injuries in the crash. Illinois state police are still investigating the accident.
The truck was traveling east on Route 6 when it collided with the woman’s vehicle headed west. The impact pushed the SUV into a light pole. The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. The two children in the vehicle, a 4 year-old and a 1 year-old, were removed from the wreckage and taken to hospitals in Joliet and Downers Grove.
Accident reconstruction experts are working to understand the incident. The damage to the SUV was catastrophic, leaving a difficult job of determining what happened. It is not even known if the children were in the back seat when the semi struck the SUV. Pending the results of the investigation, no traffic citations have been issued in connection with the accident.
While the intersection in question has been cited as needing a traffic light, no serious accidents had occurred. It remains to be seen if the severity of this incident will result in changes to the traffic control scheme currently in place.
