Rapoport Weisberg & Sims P.C. filed a product liability lawsuit today against AM2PAT, INC., d/b/a Sierra Pre-filled, a company that manufactured contaminated heparin syringes used by hospital outpatients with cancer and other serious illnesses. The plaintiff, a 30-year-old leukemia outpatient of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, became violently ill after using the tainted syringes as part of her home infusion therapy, uncontrollably shaking, vomiting and developing a fever that reached as high as 105.5 degrees Fahrenheit. The product liability victim, who has still not recovered from her bacterial infection, was rushed to the Emergency Department at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and admitted for nine days, and she will require a future surgical procedure to replace her intravenous line.
According to the product liability lawsuit, the bacterium that contaminated the syringes and caused the plaintiff’s infection was called Serratia marcescens. It has been reported that the same bacterium has contaminated all syringes within Sierra Pre-Filled lot number 070926h, possibly infecting over 100 outpatients, including at least 20 outpatients of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
The contaminated Pre-Filled heparin syringes have been distributed nationwide including within the following states: Florida, Texas, Illinois, Colorado and Pennsylvania.
